The Army Corps of Engineers is constantly evaluating its dams, including those here in the Upper Cumberland.
Linda Adcock, the Corps’ project manager for the rehabilitation work at Center Hill Dam, said the work going on at Center Hill right now is a result of the comprehensive safety program at the dams.
The Corps is nearing the end of a massive 13-year project to fix the earthen part of the Center Hill Dam. The first part was a 3-year grouting project, the second inserted a 2-foot-thick concrete wall into the earthen dam. The third and final project will build a concrete reinforcement berm in a low area southeast of the main dam. That project should be completed in 2019. The contract for the third project was awarded last year.
The dam was constructed in the 1940s.
