The Better Business Bureau and Sentry Shred will be shredding documents for free Saturday. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the corner of 6th and Cedar at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
BBB Upper Cumberland Manager Elaine Smith said folks can bring five boxes of documents to shred.
“We’re shredding documents, old checks, IRS returns, credit card statements, anything a thief could use to steal your identity,” she said.
Smith said those are the kind of documents that need to be kept safe. Thieves will go through dumpsters to pull that information out of the trash, Smith said.
Folks can witness their documents being shredded to make sure they’re safe, Smith said.
“We have people there that’ll take it out of your car, we usually load up the trash cans that are there, and then they put them on a lifter and it lifts it up to the truck and it’s dumped into the shredder and it takes it into tiny, tiny pieces,” she said.
Saturday’s shred day is the 15th annual event.
