Pickett County Executive Richard Daniel believes changes in the county’s solid waste procedures are saving a lot of money.
More than a year ago, the county started phasing out it’s landfill and replaced it with a convenience center. Where that landfill cost nearly half a million dollars to operate, the transfer station is cheaper. Daniel said the cost of the station is just over $100,000.
“We’re about to have to build a jail, we think we can build a jail without a tax increase because of the money we’ve saved just by closing the landfill down and operating a transfer station,” Daniel said.
The county has also been recycling to lower the amount of solid waste and bring in some extra money.
